The Used Book Company is a for-profit entity. When we receive donations or buy items, ownership of the property transfers from the donor or seller to the Used Book Company. Ownership does not stay with the patron who donated or sold the items. Donations made to our company are NOT tax-deductible.
When we sell, donate, or recycle the items, or when we donate a portion of the revenue from the sales, ownership of the property passes from the Used Book Company to the respective recipient, and such actions do not qualify as tax-deductible for the donor or seller. As a for-profit company, we are unable to provide receipts for tax purposes.
We have two methods of acquiring items and we want to clarify what we do with the items and the proceeds:
1) We receive donations from individuals and organizations. - When we receive donations via our donation bins, we have a beneficiary for each bin.* We make an up-front donation to the benficiary on a monthly basis based on the expected revenue ($100-$150/month or ~$.05/lb.). When we pick up donations or receive donations in the mail, these benefit the beneficiary at ~$.05/lb. We then sell, donate, or recycle the books. When we sell the books, we donate a portion of the proceeds to a variety of other nonprofit organizations. These monetary donations are made on a monthly basis after the items have sold. 2) We purchase items from individuals and organizations. - We either sell, donate, or recycle the items. When we sell items, we donate a portion of the proceeds to a variety of nonprofit organizations. These monetary donations are made on a monthly basis after the items have sold. * Beneficiaries can be found at the bottom of the "drop box locations" page, along with the portion of proceeds they will receive. The Used Book Company uses beneficiary names and logos with permission, which in no way constitutes an endorsement, express or implied, of any product, service, company, opinion or political position. The Used Book Company and the beneficiaries are independent entities, and contributions do not imply any co-venture, professional fundraiser or formal partnership.
